Why does keeping the board updated feel like a second job?

In theory, tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana are supposed to tell you "what’s in progress", "what’s blocked" and "what’s done".
In reality, I often feel like I’m the integration layer between the tool and the team. Every sprint, there’s at least some friction around tasks sitting in the wrong status and missing comments or context. I have to chase DEVs to get status of their tickets on regular basis and it makes me feel like babysitting.
I’ve tried the usual approaches:
- simplifying workflows
- reducing statuses
- reminders (daily / Slack / standup)
- small automations
- explaining why it matters
It helps for a little moment… but never fully sticks.
Is the real problem discipline, tool or workflow? Do people update the board without being asked?
